  • 1Yas Island is the simplest base for race week; W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island puts you inside the circuit complex itself.
  • 2Abu Dhabi city gives more hotel choice and a broader trip, while Dubai suits a longer UAE holiday rather than daily commuting.
  • 3Yacht stays at Yas Marina need written confirmation of overnight capacity, berth, marina access and F1 tickets.

YAS MARINA CIRCUIT GUIDE

Yas Marina Circuit Guide: Layout, Grandstands and Where to Watch From

Yas Marina Circuit is one of Formula 1's most distinctive venues: a 5.281 km track built around the waterfront, with long straights, heavy braking zones, a sweeping banked corner and a final sector framed by Yas Marina and the illuminated W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island.

For spectators, where you watch from makes a significant difference. Some areas put the emphasis on overtaking and braking; others on outright speed, the start and pit lane, or the marina backdrop.

This guide explains the Yas Marina Circuit layout, its key corners, grandstand sightlines and marina-side viewing areas to help you understand where the action happens.

THE CIRCUIT

Understanding the Yas Marina Circuit Layout

Yas Marina is not one continuous type of track. Its 16 corners create several distinct viewing zones.

TURNS 1–4 THE FAST OPENING SECTION

After leaving the start-finish straight, drivers negotiate Turn 1 before building speed through the opening sequence.

This part of the lap is about momentum rather than sustained wheel-to-wheel racing. It feeds into Turn 5, where the character of the circuit changes dramatically.

TURN 5 HAIRPIN AND RACE SETUP

Turn 5 is a tight hairpin and an important setup point.

Drivers brake into the hairpin before accelerating onto the circuit's longest straight. A strong exit matters because it determines speed all the way down towards Turn 6.

This makes Turn 5 interesting for two reasons: braking and close racing at the corner itself, and the setup for an overtaking attempt along the following straight.

TURNS 6–7 THE BIG BRAKING ZONE

The approximately 1.2 km straight between Turns 5 and 6 gives cars time to build significant speed and provides one of the circuit's principal overtaking opportunities. Formula 1 itself identifies this section as a major passing zone.

At its end, drivers brake hard into Turns 6 and 7.

This combination makes the area particularly attractive for spectators who want to see late braking, position changes and cars running close together.

TURN 9 MARSA CORNER

Turn 9 was created as part of Yas Marina Circuit's 2021 reconfiguration, when the former sequence in this section was replaced by a wider, banked corner designed to improve racing flow and overtaking potential.

TURNS 10–12 TECHNICAL TRANSITION

After Turn 9, the circuit becomes more technical.

Formula 1 highlights the sequence through Turns 10 and 11 into Turn 12 because drivers must brake while the car is still carrying lateral load.

For spectators, this section is less about a single dramatic braking point and more about watching how drivers position the car through a connected sequence.

TURNS 13–16 THE MARINA AND HOTEL SECTION

The final sector brings the circuit into its most recognisable setting.

Cars pass the marina and negotiate the closing corners around the W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island before returning to the start-finish straight. The circuit famously runs beneath part of the hotel structure, making the architecture part of the track itself.

By race time, this section also becomes one of the most visually distinctive parts of the circuit as the hotel and floodlights illuminate the marina.

RACE ACTION

Where Does Overtaking Happen at Yas Marina?

Not every part of the circuit offers the same chance of seeing a pass.

TURN 6 - A MAIN OVERTAKING ZONE

The long run from Turn 5 creates the clearest overtaking setup. Cars can use the straight to close on the driver ahead before braking heavily for Turn 6.

Best nearby viewing: West Straight Grandstand

TURN 5 - BRAKING AND POSITIONING

The hairpin itself can generate close racing, but it is also important because drivers need a clean exit onto the longest straight.

Best nearby viewing: North Grandstand

TURN 9 - SIDE-BY-SIDE RACING

The wide, banked Marsa Corner allows drivers to carry speed through the turn and can support side-by-side battles.

Best nearby viewing: South Grandstand

WATCHING TIP

For maximum overtaking potential, prioritise North/Turn 5 or West Straight/Turns 6–7. For a combination of racing and the classic Yas Marina setting, look towards South and Marina.

GRANDSTANDS

Yas Marina Circuit Grandstands Compared

MAIN - FOR THE HEART OF RACE DAY

Main Grandstand overlooks the start-finish straight. It is the strongest choice for spectators who want the grid, race start, pit-lane activity, chequered flag and post-race atmosphere rather than a dedicated overtaking corner.

NORTH - FOR THE HAIRPIN

North Grandstand faces Turn 5, putting spectators close to heavy braking and the corner that launches cars onto the longest straight.

NORTH STRAIGHT - FOR SPEED

North Straight gives a different experience: cars accelerating hard away from Turn 5 along the circuit's longest straight. It suits spectators who want to appreciate outright F1 speed.

WEST STRAIGHT - FOR OVERTAKING

West Straight is positioned around the braking zone at Turns 6 and 7. Formula 1 recommends this part of the circuit specifically for overtaking action.

SOUTH - FOR TURN 9 AND THE MARINA

South Grandstand provides panoramic views of Turn 9 together with Yas Marina and W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island. The official 2026 ticket guide also highlights it for side-by-side battles and the post-race celebration lap.

MARINA - FOR THE CLASSIC ABU DHABI VIEW

Marina Grandstand puts the visual identity of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix front and centre: superyachts, the marina and the illuminated W hotel alongside the racing.

The official 2026 description places the grandstand above the F2 and F4 UAE support-race garages and highlights its views across Yas Marina and towards South Grandstand.

ICONIC SECTION

The Marina and W Abu Dhabi Hotel

Few Formula 1 circuits integrate their surroundings into the track as visibly as Yas Marina.

The W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island sits within the circuit complex, with the track passing beneath part of the hotel in the final sector. During the evening, its illuminated exterior becomes one of the defining visual features of the Grand Prix.

The marina sits alongside this section of the track. This creates the familiar Abu Dhabi GP image of F1 cars, yachts, water and the illuminated hotel within the same scene.

For spectators, however, the attraction of this area is not purely photographic. Turn 9 provides racing action before the cars move into the more technical final sector, making South and marina-side locations useful for viewers who want both atmosphere and on-track interest.

TRACKSIDE MARINA

Where Do the Yacht Berths Sit Relative to the Circuit?

Yas Marina sits inside and alongside sections of the race circuit, particularly around the later part of the lap.

The marina currently has 227 wet berths, accommodating yachts from 8 metres to 175 metres, and specifically advertises race-week track-view berth options.

That last word matters: options.

Not every berth has the same relationship to the track, and a berth at Yas Marina should not automatically be described as having an unrestricted F1 view.

TRACK-VIEW BERTHS

Some marina positions are specifically offered with race-track views. The exact sightline depends on berth location, yacht position and surrounding structures or vessels.

NON-TRACK-VIEW BERTHS

Other berths place guests inside the race-week marina atmosphere without providing the same direct track sightline.

WHY BERTH POSITION MATTERS

Two yachts of similar size can therefore provide different race-week experiences simply because they occupy different parts of the marina.

Before booking a yacht specifically for F1 viewing, confirm:

  • the assigned or proposed berth;
  • whether it is classified as track-view;
  • which section of track is visible;
  • whether the view is direct or partial; and
  • whether surrounding yachts or structures may affect the sightline.

Yas Marina confirms that special Grand Prix berthing arrangements apply during race week and must be booked in advance.

TWILIGHT RACING

Sun, Shade and the Day-to-Night Transition

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is known for beginning in daylight and finishing beneath the Yas Marina Circuit floodlights.

That transition affects more than photographs.

Late-afternoon spectators can experience direct sun before conditions change through sunset and into darkness. Formula 1 recommends considering higher grandstand seats for wider views and greater shade.

DURING DAYLIGHT

Sun exposure and viewing direction matter more. Covered grandstands provide protection overhead, but the position of the sun can still affect comfort and visibility.

AROUND SUNSET

The visual character of the circuit changes quickly. The marina, yachts and W hotel become increasingly prominent as natural light fades.

AFTER DARK

Floodlighting takes over completely, producing the familiar night-time Yas Marina setting for the latter part of the race.

SPECTATOR TIP

Even with covered seating, plan for warm daytime conditions. Shade, hydration and sun protection remain relevant for afternoon sessions and time spent moving around the circuit.
